Tejubehan is an elderly woman originally from a community of nomadic singers, who taught herself to draw. Never formally educated, she tells her story through images – the text was narrated to us orally. She reflects on her long life: her childhood, her family’s migration to the city, her marriage – and how she learned to draw. Becoming an artist changes her life profoundly – bringing her joy and a sense of agency, an ability to express her dreams for a life of freedom and possibility – not just for herself, but for all women.

Tejubehan

Born in the village Van in Rajasthan, Tejubehan is from the Paua caste of bards and mystic singers of Rajasthan. It is very unusual for women from this community to participate in public life. Tejubehan has a fine voice, and encouraged by her husband Ganesh Jogi, she began singing alongside him in restaurants and on the streets. On their travels they met the well-known artist Haku Shah, who inspired and supported their creation of art. From the beginning, she has loved drawing women, and they have been her inspiration ever since.
