How Long?

From the instant of photosynthesis to the decades it takes for a forest to grow, here’s a deceptively simple everyday audit of time and duration. Set in the tropics, this beautifully illustrated book invites the reader to reflect playfully on complex themes like human time and biological processes.
In an era of climate change, this kind of reflection is both sobering and hopeful – reminding us of the time of the germinal, of that precise moment when life emerges from a seed or embryo….a moment that cannot be hurried into existence, and requires its own duration.

Mathilde Rives

Mathilde Rives is a Paris-based illustrator and member of 'Pauline Perplexe', an artist-run space in Arcueil. She teaches drawing at ESAD-Pyrénées and balances her work between print and animation, creating both personal projects and commissioned works for press, communication, and children's literature. Rives explores the relationship between language and image through her drawings, which often translate into publications, installations, and animations.
