Jangarh Singh Shyam

Jangarh Singh Shyam is considered to be the most brilliant Gond artist of his time. He brought Gond art from the walls of the village into the public eye, including galleries and museums. Jangarh also actively nurtured the talents of upcoming Gond artists. Amongst them was Bhajju Shyam, who was recently honoured with India’s fourth-highest civilian award -- the Padma Shri. Tragically, Jangarh passed away in 2001.

Gond Art

The art of the Gond tribal community in central India is dense yet intricate and rich with meaning. The Gonds are one of India’s largest indigenous communities, and art is central to their lives. Originally painted on walls and floors, Gond art has since found its way to paper and canvas. Click here to discover other Tara projects with Gond artists.
